The Latest Trend in Fashion? Mixing Clothing and Ceramics

"Maria Cornejo is the latest to fall for ceramics, those at-hand quotidian objects whose appeal is growing among the fashion set. Visitors to her NoHo boutique will find works specially created by Bridget Ann Clark in black-and-white, Zero’s spring 2015 color palette. Since 2009, when Raf Simons designed a collection for Jil Sander inspired by the mid-century French ceramicist Pol Chambost, a less sleek, more crafty aesthetic has come into favor as evidenced by the hand-hewn pieces that are increasingly popping up in clothing boutiques as fashion retailers warmly embrace lifestyle and merchandise objects—books, candles, plates, bowls—alongside apparel. Rachel Comey’s pop-up ceramics shop, for one, generated lots of press. Stroll into Williamsburg’s Oroboro, and you’ll find Paula Greif ceramic breakfast bowls and April Napier vases as well as garments by Cosmic Wonder and jewelry by Dream Collective. Clothing and ceramics are a combo that’s complementary rather than matchy-matchy, and totally on trend."

Fathom by Romy Northover

Thanks to Rita Mehta at FATHOM for the mention:

"*There are few things I love more than travel, so I'm fortunate that my work gives me the opportunity to do so quite often. I run The American Edit, a website that celebrates the best American-made products. I typically plan my trips around independent restaurants and shops I want to visit (with a few museums or hikes thrown in), which means I'm always uncovering new and incredible brands and the shops that carry them.

Here are ten of my favorite recent finds, all manufactured in the USA and sold at small, locally owned shops across America*." RITA MEHTA

'Sargasso' at The Line by Romy Northover

Delighted to have my large coffee table bowl 'Sargasso' in at The LineThis piece is a large (18x18) coiled coffee table bowl:

“I wanted the mood of the piece to have elegance and lift, but also a depth and stability,” says Romy Northover of this large, hand-built bowl that is intended for a coffee table. “It was supremely important that it has an open lip, to gently guide the eye in when viewed from above or a seated position.” Each unique bowl is crafted from black clay using the coil method. The deep blue slip and white brushstrokes are a nod to the waters of the Sargasso Sea, a unique, shoreless region of the North Atlantic that is defined by its circular current stream. Adds Northover, “Seas can symbolize a different kind of consciousness, both mighty and mysterious.”

The creations of artist and ceramicist Romy Northover result from a unique blend of techniques and traditions from around the world, as well as an innate sense of craft. Each piece has its layers: European training, Japanese methods, and pure intuition. “It’s a very personal thing,” Northover explains of her ceramics, which share a style she calls “ancient future.”

"I feel very connected to ancient, primitive arts and to raw surfaces and textures, but I’m equally into super-refined design, styling, and modernist forms. I like the dichotomy in technique, balance, form and the experiential process."
