The Latest Trend in Fashion? Mixing Clothing and Ceramics
"Maria Cornejo is the latest to fall for ceramics, those at-hand quotidian objects whose appeal is growing among the fashion set. Visitors to her NoHo boutique will find works specially created by Bridget Ann Clark in black-and-white, Zero’s spring 2015 color palette. Since 2009, when Raf Simons designed a collection for Jil Sander inspired by the mid-century French ceramicist Pol Chambost, a less sleek, more crafty aesthetic has come into favor as evidenced by the hand-hewn pieces that are increasingly popping up in clothing boutiques as fashion retailers warmly embrace lifestyle and merchandise objects—books, candles, plates, bowls—alongside apparel. Rachel Comey’s pop-up ceramics shop, for one, generated lots of press. Stroll into Williamsburg’s Oroboro, and you’ll find Paula Greif ceramic breakfast bowls and April Napier vases as well as garments by Cosmic Wonder and jewelry by Dream Collective. Clothing and ceramics are a combo that’s complementary rather than matchy-matchy, and totally on trend."
